The research within the ICB focuses on a range of topics of contemporary and scientific importance in the broad area of chemical engineering. These include: chemical aspects of energy, heterogeneous catalysis, polymer reactions, colloid engineering, safety and environmental technology, as well as biotechnology, bioengineering and microfluidics.
The molecular sciences research their structure and their formation in nature. However, they also deal with the products and chemical processes in our industrial society, from the manufacture of a drug to environmental technology processing.

The doctoral programmes of the D-CHAB attract around 500 highly qualified doctoral students from all over the world that are doing research in 55 groups that cover a wide range of research areas in chemistry, pharmaceutical and applied sciences. About 50% of all doctoral chemistry students in Switzerland are educated at the D-CHAB.
